He obtained his Law degree from the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa in 1994 (pre-Bologna system, five-year programme) and completed his traineeship with the Portuguese Bar Association in March 1997. He has been practising law continuously since then. In 2010, he founded Borges, Novais, Gomes e Madureira – Sociedade de Advogados, RL.
